What is Data Communication?

Understanding your audience is the key to a successful data communication. It is possible to do this by creating images that are captivating and convey information. Effective data communication may involve using the right words to convey that information.

A fundamental definition of data communication is the transfer of data from one computer to another through an internet connection or other medium. Information can range from a simple audio file to text messages. The medium used for transmission of data can be wired or wireless. To make two computers able to communicate, they require a means of connecting together. This is known as a channel or network.

Modern networks for data communications employ several data transmission channels. There are three types of data transmission channels: simplex full-duplex and duplex. Simplex mode allows information to flow in only one direction at a time, while duplex mode allows both the sender and receiver to transmit at the same time. Full-duplex is similar to duplex however, it requires both the transmitter and the receiver be in sync to read the binary data bits of the transmitted signal.

The information transmitted over a data communications channel can be either digital messages transmitted by a microprocessor or an analog signal, such as the phone call or video footage that has been converted into a sequence of binary bits using pulse-code modulation. To ensure that the receiver gets the correct information, any errors in data transmission have to be spotted and corrected. This is usually accomplished by the use of sequence numbers and acknowledgement codes.
