Plot
Jagna is a young woman determined to make her own way in a Polish village from the end of the 19th century – a hotbed of gossip and constant quarrels, where rich and poor are held together by colorful traditions and adherence to a deeply rooted patriarchy. The film consists of 40,000 images, and they used 6 images in 1 second.
It took 1,350 liters of paint to paint
An adaptation of the Nobel Prize-winning novel by the creator of Loving Vincent using the same rotoscoped style of oil painting animation, that’s enough to get you interested. But with the experience of Loving Vincent, they decided to make it even better.
Although the story is a classic European rural tragedy, the music and animation take it to a new level
With dynamic camera movements intended to provide an experience rooted in Polish culture and rural life, this film does an amazing job of immersing the viewer in this world. Kamila Urzedowska is incredible as Jagna, a village beauty whose life is decided by others at every step, but despite the chains, her freedom cannot be taken away.
That final sequence is so incredibly well shot and animated that it’s impossible not to be moved after watching this
Much of the film would have been much harder to watch if it had been live action, though it’s quite difficult even in this rotoscoped style of animation.
