Plot
After 20 years, Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca to find his wife held captive by suitors seeking to become king, and his son threatened with death. To reclaim his family and all that he has lost, Odysseus must regain his strength.

The French have previously worked together on Emily Brontë’s The English Patient and Wuthering Heights. Penelope: How can men find their way to war but not their way home?
In fact, the two characters are kept apart for most of the film, which only makes the catharsis stronger in the most intense, thriller-like final section of the film, while also being slower
Focused on immersing the viewer in the multi-faceted pain and suffering of Penelope and Odysseus as Odysseus returns to Ithaca, this treatise seemed to be a fairly systematic exploration of the challenges many soldiers faced after returning from active duty, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues, reintegration into their former lives with family and society, and the memories of memories and pain, both endured and inflicted, and the resulting internal change that is irreversible. The Return relies on excellent casting to allow the viewer to experience the rollercoaster ride that the two main characters climb to great heights, the latter thanks to the unique and special resilience of Penelope and Odysseus during this difficult period in their lives, and without the support of each other.
This is a wonderful and very important work that needs to be experienced!
Fiennes brings his own unique style of portraying suffering to this work – a perfect extension of his magnificent skills from his neighbouring portrayals of pain and anguish in Spider and The End of the Liaison. Binoche is the perfect choice for Penelope because the viewer is somewhat fooled into hoping that these two will reconnect in the same way that they were close in The English Patient, and Pasolini uses this to create an additional tension in this work among those whose memories of The English Patient are still alive.
